Anna Valdez Hanks BSC was the first cinematographer to be named by BAFTA as a Breakthrough Brit in 2015, and was selected as a Berlinale Talent in 2016.
Most recently she was Director of Photography on episodes across two seasons of SILO for Apple TV+, starring Rebecca Ferguson. In 2023 she shot three episodes of CULPRITS for Disney+ and was series DoP on BBC series MAGPIE MURDERS featuring Lesley Manville. She shot HOPE GAP, with Annette Bening, Bill Nighy and Josh O'Connor, which premiered at Toronto in 2019.
In 2019 she won a Knight of Illumination Award for her cinematography on BBC drama CLIQUE, and shot the black and white science fiction film, IN VITRO, Denmark's entry to the Venice Biennale. MILE END won Best Narrative Feature at NYC Independent Film Festival and Best Cinematography at Filmmaker International Festival, both in 2016.
Anna came up through the camera department — clapper loading, focus pulling, operating — on features and high-end drama, learning from some of the best cinematographers and directors working in British film and television.
Cinema is not just her profession but her preoccupation. Her frame of reference runs from Tarkovsky and Cassavetes to contemporary genre cinema, bringing a depth of engagement with the form that is present in everything she does.
